The second Yama - Satya

Another Yama that I would like to explore is Satya which translates to truthfulness.

I found a wonderful further definition on Wikipedia: "In Yoga, Satya is one of five Yyamas, the virtuous restraint from falsehood and distortion of reality in one's expressions and actions."

When we think about truthfulness we often think about speaking the truth. Indeed, that is extremely important, but we should also consider when to speak the truth. Before speaking, even if it is truthful, ask yourself, is it helpful, is it kind, and it is necessary? While we can speak the truth, sometimes it doesn't help, or it hurts, or it isn't necessary and we should refrain. That isn't to say you shouldn't speak the truth, just to evaluate the impact and necessity.

Beyond speaking the truth, we should evaluate if our actions and deeds are in line with our thoughts, are we truthful in our actions. Sadly, in today's world, many people act one way and behave another, this incongruity is in direct conflict with the Yama of Satya. Evaluate your actions and deeds, make sure they are in line with your thoughts and beliefs, if they aren't, again, refrain.

Being true and truthful to yourself and others is imperative in living a happy, healthy life. Keep this close to your heart and in your mind.
